Details of the 'Attack on Titan' Ending

An everlasting friendship

In the credits you can see Armin as an old man remembering his friends and visiting the graves of Eren and Mikasa.

An Ackerman starts the cycle all over again?

The boy at the end of the credits, who seems to be following in Ymir's footsteps as he discovers the power of the Titans, wears a red scarf reminiscent of Mikasa, and many fans interpret him to be a descendant of her.

Eren's point of view

It's not specific to this chapter, but in the finale, Mikasa also comes out much prettier when we see her from Eren's point of view. It's done on purpose to reflect the protagonist's love for her.

Reference to Schindler's List

One of the most dramatic scenes (that of 80% of the population being crushed to death at the feet of the Titans) is in black and white, highlighting in color only the purity and innocence of a mother and her baby. A direct link to 'Schindler's List', Steven Spielberg's movie, in which the same resource is used.

MAPPA never misses a beat

Related to the above, the son's mother had appeared earlier in the series, specifically in one of Eren's first walks through Marley.

The most repeated and symbolic shot of the series

While other Shonen use the sound of ki, colorful auras, and lightning bolts to express their drama, "Attack on Titan" uses only and exclusively looks and shadows. Close-ups of eyes and pupils are the most repeated in the finale.

The beginning and the end

Did you notice that Mikasa was the first and last person Eren saw in the series?

The reference to the first episode

The moment in the reverie when Eren asks Mikasa why she is crying is a clear reference to the first episode of the entire series, in which it was Mikasa who asked Eren this very question with these very words. Now we know why Eren cried. By the way, pay attention to the detail that Mikasa was collecting firewood and now Eren is chopping it.

Eren's most selfish wish granted

Mikasa fulfills what Eren expressed in what many consider to be the worst panel in the manga (well done Armin for highlighting the creepiness of the situation). In it, Eren assures us that he wants Mikasa to remember him for at least 10 years after he's gone, and not to date anyone else until then. In the credits we see that she fulfills this wish and rebuilds her life a decade later.

A tear-jerker ending

Beyond the post-credits scene, no one should miss Ai Higuchi's ending for the series finale. With the song "See You Later" in the background, he shows us an ending in which Eren and Mikasa live a life together, oblivious to titans and conflicts.
