A deleted ‘The Lord of the Rings’ scene showed a corrupted Frodo twisted into a Gollum-like creature
What could have been the worst possible outcome for Frodo in ‘The Lord of the Rings’? A deleted scene from the Peter Jackson trilogy gave us the answer.
The One Ring consumes its wearer and eats away at them from the inside, whispering twisted words in their mind that rot the soul. Smeagol allowed himself to be deceived by its lies and transformed into Gollum. Bilbo artificially extended his life, and although he never completely succumbed to the artifact’s influence, he was affected by its power. Years passed and Sauron discovered the whereabouts of the One Ring, so Gandalf entrusted Frodo with the heavy burden of transporting it to Rivendell. Afterward, it was decided that the Hobbit would be in charge of taking it to Mordor. What would have happened if he had become a creature like Gollum? Faramir dreamed of it in a scene from ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ that has never seen the light of day.
In one of the sequences in this film, Gollum, Frodo, and Sam are captured by Faramir and his soldiers. In both the film and extended versions they are taken to Osgiliath, where they are held waiting to be taken to Minas Tirith. However, before that happened, a scene was planned in which Faramir had a vision about Frodo. A parallel is drawn between the hobbit and Gollum, as the nightmare sees Frodo being seduced and corrupted by the One Ring. Like the unfortunate Smeagol, the bearer’s body was altered and deformed by the influence of the powerful ring.
The transformation of Smeagol into Gollum can be seen in the prologue of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, which shows the discovery of the Ring and the conflict that ensues. The hobbit allows himself to be seduced and ends up murdering his cousin, which is why he is expelled forever. Condemned to wander aimlessly, days turn into months, months into years, and poor Smeagol even forgets his real name.
Why Faramir wants the One Ring for Gondor
One of the scenes from the Extended Edition of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ outlines Faramir’s situation perfectly. His father, Denethor, disdains him and constantly compares him to his brother Boromir. The character has the overwhelming need to receive paternal approval, so when Frodo falls into his hands, he thinks of nothing else than taking the One Ring to Gondor and using the enemy’s weapon against the enemy. Frodo tells him that Boromir betrayed the Fellowship of the Ring due to the influence of the One Ring, and although he has no proof, in the end, he decides to believe this version and lets them go.
Peter Jackson and his team will return to Middle Earth very soon. The anime movie ‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ will be released on December 5, while a new live-action film, ‘The Hunt for Gollum’, will be released in 2026.
