Ridley Scott has admitted to never reading anything about Napoleon before directing the movie

Amid questioning about the historical accuracy of ‘Gladiator 2′, Ridley Scott has admitted to never reading up on Napoleon Bonaparte while making that film.

Napoleón

Ridley Scott seems condemned to live permanently in the eye of the hurricane, because if recently people harshly questioned the historical errors of ‘Gladiator 2′, now the ‘Napoleon’ wound has been reopened. Furthermore, it was he who caused it, since just a few days ago he gave an interview with the Vulture in which, surprisingly, he admitted that he had read absolutely nothing about the history of Napoleon Bonaparte.

“There are more than 10,000 books about Napoleon and they all contain both fact and conjecture. I left the reading to the poor bastard in charge of writing the script”, explained Scott, referring to the screenwriter of the ‘Napoleon’ film, David Scarpa, in an obvious joking tone. Furthermore, the filmmaker defends the fact of not documenting himself, claiming that “everyone has an opinion about what happened so I always ask if anyone was there”.

The battle of Austerlitz, the great challenge

It is the highlight of the film because of what it represents historically, which is why it also became the most demanding challenge when it came to capturing it on film. As Scott explained, some 68,000 French soldiers participated in the real conflict against almost 90,000 Austro-Russian soldiers, something absolutely impossible to do on filming for logistical reasons. The solution was to put 400 human soldiers and a hundred horses in front and then resort to CGI effects to create it all. “The work of the extras was fantastic,” he said.
