A Rugrats live-action movie with CGI babies in development

One of Nickelodeon’s biggest franchises is set to return in the near future with a planned live-action/CGI hybrid movie.

The return of Rugrats seems imminent, with new reports suggesting that Paramount has given the green light to a new film. However, this film is set to be a mixture of live action and CGI, completely ditching the animated version we knew in the 90s.

According to the first report from Deadline, Paramount has greenlit the film to be directed by Jason Moore, known for his work on Pitch Perfect. The script will be written by Saturday Night Live’s Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. Shortly afterwards, however, Variety reported that what seems to be the most peculiar detail of this version is that it will be a “live-action/ CG hybrid”, also mentioning that “Tommy Pickles and his pals Chuckie Finster and Phil and Lil DeVille will be animated in the movie, which is set in the real world à la “Sonic the Hedgehog.’”

At the moment, no further details are known about the film, as it is still in its infancy (no pun intended), so there are no details about any possible actors attached to the film, or even a synopsis that would give us some more light on the characters we can expect to see again in this particular world.

Over 30 years of nappy adventures

Since its premiere in 1991, Rugrats has been one of Nickelodeon’s most important animated series, following the adventures of Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster and Phil and Lil DeVille. The cartoon was a huge success and ran for nine seasons and 172 episodes. In addition to this television success, there have been two feature films, 1998′s ‘The Rugrats Movie’, 2000′s ‘Rugrats in Paris’ and a 2003 sequel, All Grown Up! as well as a recent CGI reboot to be released by Paramount+ in 2021.
