A Turkish city called Batman tried to sue Christopher Nolan for ‘The Dark Knight’

As popular and successful as ‘The Dark Knight’ was, with Christian Bale and Heath Ledger starring, it still had some international legal issues because of the name of the superhero.

Batman is a very popular name throughout the world, a character that has been part of popular culture since practically its creation in the late 1930s and has starred in countless comics, movies, video games, and many other productions. But it is also the name of a Turkish city that starred in one of the most hilarious legal confrontations in the history of Hollywood with the complaint of its mayor about ‘The Dark Knight’ by Christopher Nolan, a movie that is turning 16 years old since its release in theaters.

Batman and his most unexpected antagonist:Turkish Batman

"Esta vez fue tu culpa, Batman"

The city of Batman, the capital of the district and province of the same name in Türkiye, starred in one of the strangest litigations in recent memory. Originally known as Iluh, the village grew exponentially during the 1940s after the discovery of oil in its vicinity. It would soon change its name to Batman due to the proximity of a river of the same name, whose Turkish meaning responds to a unit of measurement.

Well, with the popularity achieved by ‘The Dark Knight’ by Christopher Nolan, the mayor of said Turkish town did not hesitate to take legal action against Hollywood, ensuring that “the name of Batman belongs to us. “There is only one Batman in the world.” The idea was to take advantage of the media success of the film starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger to get their way, although the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed.

However, far from forgetting the issue, the mayor stuck to his guns and assured that the film had a very negative impact on its citizens, linking the film with an alleged increase in crimes and suicides, a situation that the city had been experiencing for a long time and that had nothing to do with the premiere of the celebrated film by DC. However, the litigation did not go any further and ended any hint of similar lawsuits over shared names without any type of legal support.
