Christopher Nolan, the famous filmmaker behind huge hits like his Batman trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk, has sparked curiosity among fans by revealing that he’s interested in venturing into the realm of horror cinema. Despite not having formally announced his next project, Nolan recently shared this and more at the British Film Institute regarding his fascination with the horror genre and his contemplation of crafting a horror film if the right concept emerges.

As reported by Variety, Nolan expressed his love for horror films, highlighting their reliance on cinematic techniques to evoke visceral reactions from audiences. “Oppenheimer has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter,” he remarked, indicating a potential thematic overlap with his next project. Nolan emphasized the rarity of truly exceptional horror ideas, noting that while he has a desire to explore the genre, he has yet to encounter a story that fits well with his creative vision.

Beyond narrative elements, Nolan expressed admiration for the cinematographic potential inherent in horror storytelling. “It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films, and they are films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.”

While Nolan’s filmography boasts diverse narratives, ranging from psychological thrillers to epic science fiction, a traditional horror film remains absent from his works. However, his comments hint at a possibility of him exploring the genre in the future.

Right now, Nolan is fully entangled with Oppenheimer and its many nominations in the Academy Awards. In total the film is in the running for 13 different categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. It’s almost a given that Nolan will take home at least one Oscar Award at the end of the night. The ceremony will take place on March 10, 2024.
