Video game adaptations continue to pile up for the coming years, and one of the projects announced in May 2025 is finally showing signs of life again. This morning, Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24 announced that production has begun on the live-action film inspired by Elden Ring, which is being directed by Soulslikes game fan, Alex Garland, known for films such as Ex Machina and Civil War.

In addition, the film’s release date was also revealed, and fans will have to wait, as it won’t hit theaters until March 3, 2028. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the film will be shot in IMAX format.

The Cast Revealed

Another detail that was revealed was the cast of ‘Elden Ring’, and although it hasn’t yet been specified which characters each actor will portray, the list includes several high-profile names. Notable among them are Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), and Nick Offerman (The Last of Us). The cast also includes Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.

One of the most important details—the story—remains to be seen. It has not been confirmed whether the film will directly adapt the video game’s story or present an original adventure set within the universe created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin. The project originated from Garland’s interest, who was showing the video game to A24’s head of acquisitions, who was struck by the visual style of Elden Ring, comparing it to The Lord of the Rings.
