Aaron Sorkin says Jesse Eisenberg turned down ‘The Social Reckoning’ after three days of talks

The director reveals why ‘The Social Network’ star refused the role, opening the door for Jeremy Strong.

Jesse Eisenberg La Red Social

This week, the first teaser for ‘The Social Reckoning’ was released. The film is a spiritual sequel to the 2010 movie ‘The Social Network’, in which Jesse Eisenberg (‘Zombieland’, ‘Now You See Me’) starred as the founder of Facebook—now Meta—Mark Zuckerberg. However, this new film features Jeremy Strong (Succession) in the role of the CEO. Why didn’t Eisenberg return for this film? Director and writer Aaron Sorkin has the answer.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sorkin revealed that although he believed the role was meant for Eisenberg, he was unable to convince him to return after three days. “I felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested,” says Sorkin. “He simply didn’t want to be associated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore; he has his issues with the guy. He doesn’t like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say ‘I’m CEO, bitch’ for him to sign.”

Eisenberg’s refusal opened the door for Strong. According to the interview, Sorkin and Strong ran into each other at a 2025 Oscar party, where the actor asked the writer what he was working on, adding that if Eisenberg wasn’t interested, he would be.

What is ‘The Social Reckoning’ about?

According to its synopsis, ‘The Social Reckoning’ “is based on the events that led to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Mickey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to embark on a dangerous journey that ultimately exposes the social network’s most closely guarded secrets.”

The cast will also include Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies), Betty Gilpin (Glow), Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire), and more. On the music front, Alexandre Desplat will take over the role previously held by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

‘The Social Reckoning’ premieres October 9, 2026.
