After Assassin’s Creed Shadows, what’s next? Revisiting Ubisoft’s mysterious Codename Hexe

Dark magic, stealth and witch trials... Assassin’s Creed Codename ‘Hexe’ seems unlike anything before.

Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe

With Assassin’s Creed Shadows now out in the wild, some of us are turning our attention to Ubisoft’s next big historical adventure: Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe. First teased in 2022, Hexe remains one of the most mysterious entries in the franchise, promising a dark, supernatural twist unlike anything we’ve seen before.

What is Assassin’s Creed Hexe?

Ubisoft describes Hexe as a “very different type of Assassin’s Creed game”, hinting at a horror-inspired experience. The reveal trailer featured ominous music, dead leaves, and an Assassin’s insignia made of broken branches, setting the tone for what could be the darkest installment yet.

Setting and story: witch trials and supernatural themes

While Ubisoft hasn’t officially confirmed the setting, reports suggest Hexe takes place in 16th-century Central Europe, during the Holy Roman Empire’s witch trials. The protagonist, rumored to be Elsa, is believed to be a woman accused of witchcraft, navigating a world of fear, persecution, and supernatural forces.

Leaks indicate that Hexe will feature:

  • A dense, atmospheric world inspired by historical witch hunts.
  • Supernatural abilities, possibly tied to ancient artifacts.
  • A fear system, where enemies react dynamically to Elsa’s powers.

Gameplay: stealth, possession, and survival mechanics

Unlike recent open-world entries, Hexe may have a more focused, narrative-driven structure, emphasizing stealth and survival. Some leaked gameplay details include:

  • Possession mechanics – Elsa can control animals, including cats, to evade enemies.
  • Dynamic enemy reactions – Soldiers will fear and hunt Elsa, making stealth more crucial than ever.
  • Limited combat – Unlike traditional Assassin’s Creed protagonists, Elsa may rely more on magic and deception than direct combat.

Release window and platforms

Ubisoft has yet to announce an official release date, but reports suggest Hexe is expected to launch after Assassin’s Creed Shadows, possibly in 2026. The game will be part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, Ubisoft’s evolving Animus hub for future AC titles.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is shaping up to be one of the most unique entries in the franchise, blending historical horror, supernatural elements, and stealth-driven gameplay. While details remain scarce, its witch trial setting and eerie atmosphere could make it a standout experience in the series.
