After missing the Oscars, Demi Moore’s ’96 box office flop sweeps global streaming charts
Striptease, which got a bad rap upon its release, gets a second life as it unexpectedly triumphs on Max.

Demi Moore is one of the biggest actresses of the year. After her performance as Elizabeth Sparkle in ‘The Substance’, the American actress won every possible award during the awards season, including the Golden Globe. However, against all odds, she lost the Oscar to Mikey Madison and his impressive performance in ‘Anora’. Demi Moore was left without her coveted statuette, but she was recently able to celebrate a movie that is almost 30 years old.
‘Striptease’ (1996), one of the most controversial films of its time and starring the actress, is getting a second life on streaming platforms. The film has now broken into the top 10 most watched films on Max worldwide, after being a huge box office flop at the time.
What is Striptease about?
Striptease" follows Demi Moore’s character, Erin Grant, who loses her job and custody of her daughter. To earn money to get her back, she takes an almost forced job at a strip club, where she catches the eye of a mysterious congressman played by Burt Reynolds. The movie was controversial at the time because of its themes and Demi Moore’s nudity.
Upon its release in 1996, ‘Striptease’ was a resounding failure, earning only $33 million at the local box office compared to the $50 million it cost. However, it did very well worldwide, earning an additional $80 million. The film, directed by Andrew Bergman, was based on the bestselling novel of the same name. Therefore, it was predicted that the movie would do very well with its cast, but nothing could be further from the truth. ‘Striptease’ is still considered one of the worst movies ever made.
