Yesterday was a special day for fans of horror video games, as the PlayStation Showcase 2023 gave us an intense gameplay of the expected Alan Wake 2, the sequel to the popular survival horror from Remedy Entertainment. A video full of details: environments, characters, monsters... Expectations are high and the game will be released on October 17th on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
However, many fans are deeply disappointed by Remedy’s surprising decision: the game will not have a physical edition and will only be released digitally. This is an unusual case, since it is not usual to see something like this in important video games, with high production levels and in the case of something so long awaited. In fact, it should be remembered that last year Alan Wake Remastered, the enhanced version of the original title, arrived in physical format.
Remedy explains, but not convincing in the end
Remedy Entertainment has given several reasons why Alan Wake 2 will not be released in physical format, and although some of them seem to make some sense, many users feel that they are part of the problems that the industry has been dealing with for years. One of them is very notable because it refers to the fact that they do not want to release a game on a disc so that we have to download part of it over the Internet (something that is very common lately, as in the case of Hogwarts Legacy). Several players feel that the solution is not to discard the physical game, but to release it in its entirety.
Another of the reasons offered by the company focuses on the price, as they believe that releasing a physical edition will lead to a price increase and that, as they explain, betting everything on the digital format is the only thing that makes it possible to maintain a suggested retail price that does not go to the controversial $70 that we see recently.
Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 17th on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. As we told you, you will only be able to buy it in digital format.
