Alarm among Steam Deck users over the poor performance of one of the latest big releases

The open world of Borderlands 4 suffers from a very low frame rate, with constant drops and spikes.

Steam Deck 2 plazo lanzamiento salto nueva generación potencia

Steam Deck users should take precautions before purchasing one of this September’s big new releases. The fact that the compatibility section for the handheld on the Steam page says “Unknown” is a clear sign that Borderlands 4’s performance is not optimal, and indeed, this is the case.

There have already been some “victims” who have been able to try it out, and they have reported this poor performance of Gearbox’s otherwise fantastic game. As you can see on the Steam Deck HQ channel, the minimum requirements for Borderlands 4 on PC are already quite high, and as expected, Steam Deck struggles to run it. This does not rule out the possibility of the game being verified for the console in the near future, but for the moment it is not particularly advisable.

As can be seen in the Steam Deck HQ video, the open areas of Borderlands 4 run at an average of around 22 fps, which could be minimally acceptable if they were consistent, but this is not the case. In fact, when loading new areas, this frame rate drops to single digits. It is possible that this performance will improve in the future after successive patches, but it does not look like it will be optimal due to the high demands of the game.

The saga returns to its roots with a remarkable installment

After a disappointing third installment and the spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, Gearbox has won back fans with a game that boasts a commendable 84 on Metacritic.

“We really loved the wonderful character customization options through their upgrade trees, with no less than three different ones for each of the four characters, full of unique options and abilities that will delight fans of trying out builds in search of the ultimate configuration to maximize performance on the battlefield,” said our colleagues in Spain in their review.
