Alarm bells ringing in Hollywood after recent parade of box office flops: These are the movies that can save the day

The cinematic year has not started well at all for the first films released.

2023 and 2024 were years in which the box office was saved by a special phenomenon. First, there is the case of ‘Barbie’, that July 20, when Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ were released simultaneously. These movies fed off each other and managed to save the box office. Last year, with ‘Gladiator 2′ and ‘Wicked,’ we had to wait until the last few months to see a profit at the box office. In the aftermath of the pandemic, the film industry is still recovering from the damage and 2025 was expected to be the year of the comeback. However, it is not off to a good start.

Despite being in theaters for just over three months, the major releases have failed miserably at the box office, regardless of the level of production. ‘Mickey 17′, the new film from Bong Joon-ho, and Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Black Bag’ failed to achieve the expected results. In addition, sequels to major franchises such as ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and ‘Paddington in Peru’ have underperformed their predecessors. There is still hope to reverse the situation; here is the list of films that can save the year:

‘A Minecraft Movie’

The big screen adaptation of the video game of the same name could be a milestone when it comes out, as a whole generation has grown up with Minecraft. The family adventure comedy will star Jason Momoa, Jack Black and Danielle Brooks. The plot will focus on these characters who must use their creativity to return to the real world after being transported there.

  • ‘A Minecraft Movie’ will be released on April 4.

‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is the sequel to ‘Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning’ (2023). The eighth installment of the saga started by Brian de Palma in 1996 will bring to an end the character of Ethan Hunt, played by the legendary Tom Cruise. He will be accompanied by Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames and Vanessa Kirby. Its predecessor was not a success at the box office, but since this is the final part, it is expected to get a better box office.

  • Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' will be released on May 23.

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’

This will be the seventh installment of the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise after Steven Spielberg started it in 1993, and the fourth in the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, it is set after the events of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’. It is expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.

  • ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ hits theaters on July 2.

‘Lilo & Stitch’

The last of this year’s box office hopefuls is another of Disney’s countless live-action films. After Snow White and Mufasa: The Lion King, 'Lilo & Stitch' is getting its own live-action movie based on the 2002 film by the same name. Disney’s live-action movies tend to do well at the box office if nothing goes wrong, so we’re looking at an almost certain success.

  • ‘Lilo & Stitch’ will be released on May 23.
