Amazon’s God of War TV series casts its Kratos and he already has experience with the franchise
Amazon’s live-action adaptation confirms its lead as production moves forward
Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have officially found their Ghost of Sparta. The studios have confirmed that Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in the upcoming live-action God of War series for Prime Video.
While Hurst is a veteran of the television industry, he is already part of the franchise’s history, having delivered a BAFTA-nominated performance as Thor in the 2022 God of War Ragnarök. His casting brings a familiar presence to the project. Known for his iconic role as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy and his recent work in Netflix’s The Abandons, Hurst’s physical presence and deep, gravelly voice make him a natural fit for the role.
Although many details about the God of War TV series remain under wraps, it is already known that the show will skip the Greek era and dive straight into the 2018 game reboot. This narrative centers on an older, more reserved Kratos living in the realm of Midgard. Following the death of his wife, Faye, Kratos and his young son, Atreus, must travel to the highest peak in all the realms to scatter her ashes.
The gods are in good hands
For those concerned about the transition from console to screen, the production team includes several key figures from the gaming world. Cory Barlog, the creative director of the 2018 game, is serving as an executive producer. He is joined by PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, helping ensure that the series remains faithful to the spirit of the source material.

The show is being helmed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, whose work on Outlander and Battlestar Galactica has demonstrated his ability to handle complex world-building and character-driven drama. Amazon appears confident in the project, having already placed a two-season order for the series.
