Apple prepares its biggest redesign in years: iOS 19 aims to dethrone Android 16

Apple is preparing for a visual transformation with iOS 19.

Update:

After Google presented a redesign of Android 16 with Material Expressive 3 at its recent Google I/O, it is now Apple’s turn. The Cupertino company is preparing to unveil an unprecedented visual change in iOS 19, its next mobile operating system, which will be unveiled at WWDC 2025 in June.

Solarium, what promises to elevate iOS 19

Anticipated since March by renowned analyst Mark Gurman, the new visual language, known internally as Solarium, promises to be one of the big news at Apple’s developer conference. And no wonder, since this is expected to be the most significant redesign that iOS has received since the arrival of iOS 7, marking more than a decade without such a profound transformation in the appearance of the system.

Apple’s vision is to unify the visual experience across its entire ecosystem of devices. This means that macOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS and visionOS will also adopt elements of this new design, seeking aesthetic and functional consistency across all its platforms.

Much of the inspiration for Solarium seems to come from visionOS, the operating system designed for the Vision Pro. The latter already marked a notable evolution in the way Apple conceives its interfaces. We can therefore anticipate that iOS 19 will offer a much more polished visual experience, with renewed animations, new icons that will surely refresh the home screen, improved transparencies and transitions that promise a more fluid and intuitive navigation.
