‘Avatar: Aang: The Last Airbender’ will definitely hit theaters, but there’s a catch
Paramount is giving the animated film a limited theatrical run ahead of its Paramount+ release to qualify for the Oscars.
The journey to bring Aang and his friends to the big screen has been as tumultuous as riding a flying bison. After announcements that initially promised a theatrical release, only to switch directly to a streaming service—followed by a terrible leak—and finally moving up the release date to late July… there’s still more to come for ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.’
According to Variety, the movie ‘Avatar: Aang: The Last Airbender’ will be in theaters for one week, though not quite as we’d like. The film will be available exclusively in theaters in Los Angeles and New York starting July 24, one day before its debut on Paramount+. The reason behind this change—and its limited theatrical release—is to qualify for awards season, with the possibility that it could be nominated for Best Animated Feature at next year’s Academy Awards.
Where can you see ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’?
The film will be released from July 24 to 30 and will have three showings per day at the AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan, as well as at the AMC Burbank Town Center 6 in Los Angeles. In addition to this opportunity to see it in theaters, there will be a screening of the film during San Diego Comic-Con on July 24.
