‘Avengers: Doomsday’ first trailer previews the biggest superhero gathering in film history
Marvel has finally unveiled the first trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ a pivotal film for the future of the franchise that has already sparked a flurry of fan theories.
It’s no longer just a video with chairs introducing the movie’s cast, nor even short clips featuring the main characters—like Steve Rogers, Thor, or the Fantastic Four—or a single image. We can finally say that the first trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is here, and as expected, it’s as epic as promised. It’s a collision of universes unlike anything we’ve seen before in the MCU, one that will lead to alliances and confrontations we thought impossible, with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) at the epicenter of it all.
What’s clear is that all the leaks about the synopsis were more than true. Three different universes will collide due to the machinations of Doctor Doom, who seeks revenge. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), formerly Captain America, manipulated the multiverse to secure his happy ending with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) after ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which in turn caused harm to Victor von Doom’s life. The leader of Latveria will pit the universes of Earth-616—the canon—against those of the Fantastic Four and the classic mutants from 20th Century Fox. Thus, viewers will enjoy what is likely to be the greatest superhero battle in cinematic history.
“Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday,” reads the movie’s description. “Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. See it in Infinity Vision, the way it’s meant to be seen, on bigger, brighter and more immersive screens”.
As expected, Doctor Doom’s appearance is one of the trailer’s biggest draws. Although he had already made an appearance in the post-credits scene of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’, Downey Jr. is a surefire way to draw audiences to theaters. His charisma as Tony Stark—a character who, in fact, launched the MCU with ‘Iron Man’ (2008)—won over fans even more than historically more popular characters such as Captain America, Thor, or the Hulk. The actor’s return was a masterstroke by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, which the House of Ideas needed following a period of crisis in its productions, both critically and commercially.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18.
