Baldur’s Gate 3 is gearing up for a major update next year, allowing Cross-play, new sublcasses and more

Not resting on its laurels, Larian Studios continues to build momentum for its latest effort. With just weeks to go before the game’s Game of the Year 2023 celebration at The Game Awards, the studio has announced that Baldur’s Gate III will receive “another major patch” next year, adding new subclasses and features such as cross-play, a photo mode.

In a Steam post, the studio announced that Patch 8 will introduce “the most eagerly anticipated features of BG3: cross-play and photo mode, along with 12 new subclasses”.

Cross Play

One of the most requested features by fans will finally allow players to join their friends’ stories no matter what platform they are on. “Once the update is live you’ll be able to invite your friends to join your cross-play lobby directly, regardless of platform and find available multiplayer lobbies with friends on other systems using the Larian Network,” wrote Larian.

New Subclasses

Each of the game’s classes will receive a new subclass, which will feature new abilities, animations, summons, and more. These subclasses are

  • Bard - College of Glamour
  • Barbarian - Path of Giants
  • Cleric - Death Domain
  • Druid - Circle of Stars
  • Paladin - Oath of the Crown
  • Fighter - Arcane Archer
  • Monk - Drunken Master
  • Ranger - Swarmkeeper
  • Rogue - Swashbuckler
  • Sorcerer - Shadow Magic
  • Warlock - Hexblade
  • Wizard - Bladesinging

Photo Mode

Finally, you can take the photos you always wanted on your Forgotten Realms journey. This feature will allow users to set up the shot they want with a variety of options ranging from camera, lens, and scene settings to post-processing effects, frames, and stickers. Everything you need for those epic moments on your game… or just silly ones.

No release date has been set for the patch, but a stress test will be available for Xbox, PlayStation and PC users, with registration starting in early January. Larian’s goal “is to go beyond our internal testing and help us catch things before they can become an issue once a patch has been released.” More details will be announced in the next Community Update.
