'Barbie' vs. 'Oppenheimer' as the Barbenheimer gets real
Via Variety’s Actors on Actors, Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie chatted about the top movie phenomenon of 2023.
The Barbie phenomenon became real, as through an interview between Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy, the stars of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ talked about the films released in 2023 of which they were part, some conflicts between productions and if the actor still does not know the memes.
The interview was the first in Variety’s Actors on Actors series, in which two actors talk about different topics. In the case of Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy, the background was pretty obvious. The actress asked if the actor had seen any Barbenheimer fan art, to which the actor replied, “I mean, it was impossible to avoid any of that stuff.”
Margot Robbie continued with the idea, stating that she was asked if the marketing departments of both films had talked to each other about doing promotions together and said, “No, this is the world doing this! This is not part of the marketing campaign.” Cillian Murphy then remarked, “And I think it happened because both movies were good.”
Conflicts between producers
Another topic of the interview between the two actors was the release date of the two films and the conflicts between the two teams. While Cillian Murphy commented that it was always Christopher Nolan’s idea to release on July 21 in the United States, because historically the English director has used that date, Margot Robbie pointed out that they also thought of that day to publicize what a producer has done.
Chuck Roven, producer of Oppenheimer, called Margot Robbie and asked her to change the release date of Barbie, to which the actress replied: “We’re not moving the date. If you’re scared to be up against us, move your date.” The conversation between them continued and he pointed out: “We’re not moving our date. I just think it’d be better for you to move.”
As they argued about the dates, Margot Robbie ended the dialogue by saying that they would not move the release date and that both films would make an excellent double feature in theaters.
