Batman: Knightfall Trilogy gets first trailer, bringing the iconic 1990s storyline to animation

Warner Bros. Animation has unveiled the first trailer for Batman: Knightfall Trilogy, which will bring one of the most significant story arcs in the Dark Knight’s history from the 1990s to the animated world.

Part 1, Knightfall, premiered this Tuesday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and will be released later this year. With this announcement, the cast has been revealed, featuring Anson Mount (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Michael Mando (Spider-Man: Brave New Day) as Bane, and Pablo Schreiber (Halo) as Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael.

Announced in October of last year during New York Comic Con, details of the trilogy had been kept under wraps, with only the participation of Jeff Wamester as director and Jeremy Adams as writer having been revealed, along with the fact that Rick Morales serves as supervising producer alongside producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are executive producers.

Part One’s official plot synopsis reads: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

What is Batman: Knightfall about?

The comic storyline ran from 1993 to 1994 and remains one of the most iconic moments in the Caped Crusader’s history: Bane breaking Batman’s back—a moment that even made its way into Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

The Knightfall story follows Bane as he sets out to conquer Gotham City, but first, he must destroy Batman. By freeing all the villains from Arkham Asylum, Bane manages to track down Batman, breaking him mentally and physically before finally ambushing him and snapping Bruce Wayne’s back over his knee, crippling him.
