Bombshell at 007: Current producers lose creative control as Amazon asserts itself as new leader

Few expected the 007 brand to change hands in terms of creative direction. Amazon Metro Golden Mayer Studios has taken a step forward and taken over the creative direction of the saga. The current producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, will be removed entirely and established as co-owners of the intellectual property, but will have no power over creative decisions.

Saying goodbye to a life connected to 007

“Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, in a press release. “We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theaters around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honored to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

Broccoli took over production of the James Bond films from his father, Albert R. Broccoli, and has spent nearly half his life bringing Ian Fleming’s agent to the big screen. The news comes at a time of transition for the brand, which is immersed in the search for a new actor to maintain the standard set by Daniel Craig in recent years. All eyes (and rumors) point to Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the chosen one, but until there is official confirmation, it is all speculation.
