Bungie’s classic shooter trilogy that paved the way for Halo is now available on Steam for free

Before the release of the Marathon reboot as an extraction shooter, you can now play the original trilogy for free as Bungie has released them on Steam.

Bungie returns to what was its first saga, as thanks to the Aleph One Developers fan collective you can now enjoy Classic Marathon, the retro FPS trilogy by the creators of Halo and Destiny. And better yet, you don’t have to pay a single cent to do so, since the game is completely free on Steam.

“Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the Aleph One community is bringing the original 1994-1996 Marathon Trilogy to Steam starting with Marathon 1,” said Bungie on Twitter/X. “Thank you to the Marathon community for your support over the years. We couldn’t do it without you.”

If you’ve never heard of it, what you’ll find here is a truly classic first-person shooter that, as is obvious, was obviously influenced by DOOM. Which FPS was not influenced by ID Software’s game? Really none, as John Romero’s game is an everlasting game that marked a before and after in video games as a whole. After Marathon, Bungie made history with the launch of Halo on the first Xbox, also being a shooter completely ahead of its time, as well as its follow-up, Halo 2. On Xbox 360, Bungie would give us three great installments of the saga: Halo 3, Halo ODST, and Halo: Reach. Later, in 2014, they would launch a new IP that would gain millions and millions of fans around the world, Destiny, which would also enjoy an equally historic sequel, Destiny 2, both installments with numerous expansions and marking the way forward for games as a service.

Now, Bungie is working on Marathon’s return in the form of a competitive extraction shooter, still without a confirmed release date, and with a planned arrival on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
