Bungie’s Marathon release date leaks (and confirmed) coming sooner than expected
Update:

The mystery surrounding Bungie’s next major project, Marathon, has finally been resolved—earlier than intended. After months of speculation, the release date for Marathon was accidentally revealed through a pre-order trailer briefly published on the Xbox Store.

The leak was first spotted by Reddit user TheJuiceBaba, who managed to record the now-deleted teaser before it was taken down. The video ended with a clear message: “Coming March 5, 2026. Pre-order now.” Bungie has since confirmed the release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and release said trailer. Alongside the standard edition, a Deluxe Edition that includes exclusive Runner and weapon cosmetics will also be available. A physical Collector’s Edition is also planned, described by the studio as a “premium unboxing experience” inspired by the fictional shell-weaving process of the game’s Sekiguchi Genetics corporation.

A new vision and a changing team

The road to release has not been without challenges. In June 2025, Bungie delayed Marathon into 2026 to better integrate feedback from internal playtests. That decision appears to have paid off, with the game resurfacing in October through limited, invite-only playtests across North America and Europe.

As the project enters its final stretch, however, the team is undergoing leadership changes. Bungie veteran and Art Director Joseph Cross recently announced his departure from the studio. Cross played a key role in shaping the bold, high-contrast visual identity that has helped Marathon stand out in the crowded extraction shooter space. “I’m incredibly proud of the visual world we built for Marathon. Getting support at this scale for something a bit different is rare, and the art team at Bungie is the best in the biz. I’ll be enjoying playing the game as a fan with all of you,” Cross said last month.
