Marathon delayed indefinitely: Bungie reworks its vision after player feedback
The extraction shooter won’t launch on September 23, as Bungie shifts focus to major gameplay improvements.

Bungie has officially postponed Marathon indefinitely, citing player feedback from the alpha playtest as a key factor. The studio acknowledges that the current build isn’t meeting expectations, so the development team is taking extra time to refine its mechanics before announcing a new release window, which will likely be in fall 2025.
In a statement, Bungie reassured fans:
“We’ll use this extra time to empower our team to create an intense, high-paced experience—one worthy of the Marathon name.”
What changes is Bungie making?
The delay allows Bungie to refine several critical aspects of the game, responding to player concerns:
- Enhanced AI encounters to make fights more challenging.
- Improved match rewards and dynamic events to keep gameplay fresh.
- Refined combat mechanics in line with Bungie’s signature FPS style.
- Visual upgrades and a darker tone to strengthen Marathon’s identity.
- Better solo and duo experiences, addressing community frustration.
- Proximity voice chat, ensuring more immersive team coordination.
While Bungie has made major design shifts before —most notably reworking Destiny—, this delay signals significant behind-the-scenes challenges.
Is Marathon in trouble?
The indefinite delay has sparked concerns about Bungie’s recent struggles, which include:
- Plagiarism accusations involving early assets.
- Staff layoffs, affecting core development teams.
- Internal restructuring, with leadership changes disrupting workflows.
While Bungie insists that Marathon isn’t canceled, fans worry the project could suffer a fate similar to Sony’s Concord, which was delayed after poor public reception.
However, Bungie still has strong industry backing, if the extra development time results in a well-polished game, Marathon may ultimately benefit from the delay.
