Can you play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without having played FF VII Remake?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is almost upon us, but will you have to rush through the previous title to be able to enjoy the new Square Enix game?

It’s almost time for the long-awaited release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second part of the remake trilogy of games adapting the story of the original FF7 from PS1. With it being a sequel, many assume that you’ll have to play through the entirety of the previous title to enjoy it, but is it true?

As it turns out, no! Square Enix themselves posted a while ago that there is no need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake before jumping into this new sequel. But how come? Currently, we don’t have any specific details about how this is possible, but Co-Director Motomu Toriyama’s message was clear:

“No, we have made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” said the co-director in the above message. Whether that means that we’re getting a hefty retelling of the many events in Remake, or if they’ll ease in new players in some way or another, we don’t know. All we can do right now is trust the process.

A Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo is out now!

During a recent State of Play focused solely on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix revealed many details about the game, it’s systems and mechanics, its minigames and the world you’ll be exploring. However probably the most exciting announcement of them all was the fact that they were releasing a demo for the game right then and then!

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo has a size of 48 GB. At launch, it will have the Nibelheim flashback where you can also control Sephiroth. Square Enix intends to update it on February 21 to introduce a playable portion in Junon. Its duration will be around 3 hours. Below we leave you the link for you to download it.

That’s a pretty sizeable chunk of game for players to enjoy, with the possibility of getting some cool bonuses once the full game releases. It’s fun enough that some fans have been practicing their piano skills for hours on end. Or if you want to read up on our hands-on experience with the game, you can find those right here! We got to play for a couple of hours and came out of the experience ready to play even more.
