Capcom unveils Resident Evil: Survival Unit, the mobile game you didn’t see coming
Capcom and Aniplex unveil a new tactical spin on the franchise.

Capcom’s latest Resident Evil project isn’t a remake or a mainline sequel, it’s a bold new entry in the form of a mobile strategy game. Titled Resident Evil: Survival Unit, the game was officially revealed during a livestream presentation hosted by Shinji Hashimoto, former Square Enix executive and co-creator of Kingdom Hearts. The event began with a short piano concert, setting a somber tone before diving into gameplay, story, and development details.
What is Resident Evil: Survival Unit?
Developed by Joycity and published by Aniplex, Survival Unit is a real-time strategy survival horror game designed for iOS and Android. It’s set in a parallel timeline that begins during the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, but quickly diverges into an alternate universe.
Players will build a base, styled after the classic Spencer Mansion, and recruit familiar characters to survive waves of enemies. The game features:
- Grid-based tactical combat
- Environmental puzzles and exploration
- Barricade placement and resource management
- Multiplayer elements, including real-time PvP and co-op missions
Who’s in the game?
Confirmed playable characters include:
- Leon S. Kennedy
- Claire Redfield
- Jill Valentine
- Barry Burton
- Carlos Oliveira
- Marvin Branagh
- Alyssa Ashcroft (Outbreak)
- Becca Woolett (Resistance)
Each character has unique skills and rarity tiers (Epic, Legendary), with synergy bonuses when assigned as squad leaders.
Music and art direction
The presentation highlighted the game’s original score, composed to evoke classic Resident Evil tension while adapting to mobile pacing. The piano intro featured motifs from Resident Evil 2, reinterpreted with ambient and orchestral layers.
Legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy) is also contributing creature designs, including a new boss called Mortem, described as “elegant and terrifying.”
Release and pre-registration
- Platforms: iOS and Android
- Release window: Late 2025
- Pre-registration: Now open on the official site, with tiered rewards based on total signups
Capcom confirmed that while Survival Unit is non-canonical, it’s being closely supervised to maintain consistency with the franchise’s tone and lore.
