Cate Blanchett reveals why she’s in the Borderlands movie: COVID
Award winning actress Cate Blanchett had her reasons to be part of the upcoming Borderlands adaptation, but she still dove into the game to play her part.
Cate Blanchett is, without a doubt, one of the most notable and surprising names in the Borderlands cast. The film has other heavyweights, but seeing Jack Black, an actor who is up for anything, playing Claptrap, is not as strange as seeing the winner of an Oscar for best actress for Blue Jasmine (and another for best supporting actress in The Aviator) playing the role of Lilith.
The Australian actress is no stranger to the curiosity aroused by the fact that she accepted the role, so she herself has taken it upon herself to clarify it: it was not because of money, nor because she was a secret Borderlands superfan, but because of mental health. Negotiations for the film coincided with the first global lockdowns and in her own words to Empire Magazine: “I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.’”
Fieldwork with a PS5
So, it was also to have something to focus on that would take him away from the mental limbo that many fell into during the pandemic. Once signed up, the actress dedicated herself to preparing for the role, doing the best fieldwork she could do at the time: buying a PS5 and playing Borderlands: “My thumbs can barely control a phone, but I bought a PS5 and we played each other,” she says. “I wanted to know the limits of the game and what fans loved about the character. I got really absorbed in that whole world. The cosplayers. The YouTube make-up tutorials.” She also confessed that she likes to do “crazy things” with the roles she accepts and accepting jobs that people don’t expect of her.
The film, directed by Hostel director Eli Roth, will be released on August 9 by Lionsgate, and features among its cast figures such as Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, and Cate Blanchet herself.
