Indies

Celeste 64, a free game that celebrates the original’s sixth anniversary, is now available!

One of the best indie games in history is getting an homage for a very special date, with an interesting and unexpected format change.

Update:
celeste

This January marks six years since the launch of Celeste, one of the most important and outstanding indie games in history, and on the occasion of the date its studio has released completely free of charge Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain. The game can be downloaded for free from the following link, and it is the work of Extremely OK Games, Maddy Thorson’s studio that replaced Maddy Makes Games, and according to the developer it no longer made sense to use that name since there were more people involved.

A game that was created in just one week to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the original title. The name will bring back memories, and it serves as a tribute to all those platforms that stood out on Nintendo 64, with titles as important as Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Donkey Kong 64, among others. For now, the game is only available on PC, but it is a good opportunity to enjoy a tribute to a great game, made with great love by its creator and that at the same time will evoke a time in which the genre of platforms was one of the most prominent.

Celeste, an indie to remember

January 2018 brought Celeste to the world of video games, a title that stood out for its simple yet difficult gameplay and also for everything it represented. Mental health as the axis of our ascension up the mountain, a constant fight against anxiety, and mechanics in which platforming requires maximum precision.

In our review of Celeste, we highlighted that “it is one of those indie games that becomes essential from the first game. In an oversaturated video game market and with thousands of studios releasing titles that try to find a place in a world without concessions, from time to time gems appear that are very worthwhile. And they give meaning to so many small developers trying their luck. Celeste is one of them.”
