Characters, power-ups, and a legendary track: A YouTube video lets you play Mario Kart on your own phone

The legendary Mario Kart has been turned into an interactive video on Google’s popular platform, although you can only “drive” on the iconic Rainbow Road track.

For years now, online mini-games have become a go-to option for all kinds of people who are simply looking to take their minds off things for a few minutes with quick, easy-to-play games. Games like Miniclip, Newgrounds, and Mousebreaker are already classics, although Flash-style games aren’t as popular these days. However, there has recently been a surprising boom in browser games: collecting Wikipedia pages as if they were Pokémon? It’s a thing. And now there’s a sort of Mario Kart in video format for YouTube.

How to Play Mario Kart on YouTube

A YouTube channel allows users to play Mario Kart while the video in question is playing, although in a somewhat rudimentary way and only on the Rainbow Road track—one of the most iconic tracks in the plumber’s racing series. All of this is thanks to the video titled “Mario Kart but it’s a PLAYABLE YouTube video!” uploaded by the channels Atlas Arcade and Animated Subtitles, which provides YouTube viewers with a set of basic instructions on how to control the “game.”

And we put “game” in quotes because it’s really just a series of videos linked to different movement options, which we use to guide our pixelated Mario and his kart without falling off the track. So first, we need to adjust the view to follow the Rainbow Path, and then turn on the subtitles to switch characters. You can play as Mario, Toad, Yoshi, Peach, Luigi, Wario, and Bowser.

To move forward, use the A and D keys on your keyboard. You can switch between the classic Mario Kart engine sizes—50 cc, 100 cc, and 150 ccby adjusting the playback speed and using the various playback options offered by YouTube to play this interactive Mario Kart-style game.

We’ll also encounter some of the most iconic power-ups from the Mario Kart series; however, if we fall off the track, we’ll have to restart the game ourselves, since the video will end automatically. The game has already become a phenomenon on YouTube, with users sharing their thoughts on social media: “I never thought I’d be playing Mario Kart on YouTube,” said one user. “Pretty much the same thing—welcome back to flash games,” added another.
