China develops the HDMI killer: The cable revolution is coming
Tencent, TCL, Huawei, and over 40 other tech giants aim to change the world forever.

What began as a local initiative in Shenzhen has quickly evolved into a bold statement from China’s tech industry: replacing the multiple cables we use daily with just one. This new standard, called GPMI (General Purpose Media Interface), might signal the end of widely used connections like HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt.
What is GPMI?
The goal of GPMI is simple: reduce the number of cables between devices while offering superior performance. According to Chinese media reports, this standard can transmit video, data, and power simultaneously.
- GPMI Type-C: Supports up to 96 Gbps bandwidth and 240 W power delivery.
- GPMI Type-B: Doubles those figures, reaching 192 Gbps and 480 W.
For comparison:
- HDMI 2.1 supports 48 Gbps but cannot transmit power.
- Thunderbolt 4 supports 40 Gbps and 100 W.

The Chinese Cable That Could Change Everything
Behind this revolutionary cable is an alliance of over 50 Chinese tech giants, including Huawei, HiSilicon, TCL, and Tencent, along with state research centers. The first prototypes were showcased last October during an 8K video conference in Shenzhen, where the draft standard was also unveiled.
GPMI is designed for high-performance, resource-intensive devices like 8K displays, extended reality glasses, and gaming laptops. The vision is ambitious: one cable for everything. Imagine connecting your laptop with a single cable that charges it, links it to an external monitor, and transfers data simultaneously.
While it sounds futuristic, this technology is already in development and could forever change how we connect our devices.
