The Russo brothers return to the forefront with a high-voltage series. In an interview with Total Film, the directors reveal their creative perspective on this new action and espionage plot, which will premiere on Prime Video next April 28.

Citadel is the answer to James Bond

When asked if Citadel is their answer to James Bond, the Russo’s nod without hesitation, “It’s an accurate way to talk about it, without question,” Joe Russo acknowledges. “I mean, we loved Bond growing up. We’re immense fans of Bond, but our job is to try to take what we love about these sorts of genres and films that have influenced us and figure out ways to push them into spaces and places that surprise us,” mentioned Anthony Russo.

Still, the creative insists that their job as storytellers is not to give audiences “another version of Bond. " Our job as storytellers is to bring you a fresh experience that you are excited and surprised by,” he insists.

The series is led by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, who play Nadia Sinh and Mason Kane, respectively. Joe Russo praised Priyanka’s presence in the series, “And so what was interesting to us was upending that. Priyanka is really gifted physically. She is a badass on camera and she kicks a lot of ass in the show. Without giving too much away, her character is driving a lot of the action for the better part of the series.”

Both characters are accompanied by faces such as, Stanley Tucci (Bernard Orlick), Ashleigh Cummings (Abby Conroy), Moira Kelly, Caoilinn Springall (Hendrix Conroy), Lesley Manville (Dahlia Archer), Timothy Busfield (Simmons), Roland Moller (Anders Slije), Osy Ikhile (Carter Spence), Andy M. Miligan, Alex Brock, Peter Parket Mensah, Lee Baylis, Joseph Millson and Olegar Fedoro, among others.
