Firewalk Studios

Concord unveils new details about its game modes and monetization plans

The next PlayStation live-service shooter, Concord, has confirmed it’ll include microtransactions exclusively for cosmetic content.

Firewalk Studios wants to repeat the success of Helldivers 2, having learned from the successes and mistakes of Arrowhead Studios with the most popular multiplayer so far this year. Thus, Concord will arrive at a reduced price and will have a simultaneous launch on PlayStation 5 and PC, although we will be able to discover it first through its exclusive beta for pre-orders, and later the open beta for everyone. Today we can learn new information about this hero shooter with which PlayStation wants to breathe life into a genre that in recent times has been in the doldrums.

Since its presentation in the past State of Play of May, the Firewalk devs wanted to emphasize the charisma of its characters, which are inevitably reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy. At launch, there will be 16 heroes available, each of them with a background that we will discover, since despite being an eminently multiplayer title, there will be a certain narrative element.

“Yeah, that trailer, that moment is such a tiny slice of everything that we’ve been working on for years and years,” said director Kim Kreines in an interview with VGC. “We’re excited for the game and for the IP, and for the game to be in people’s hands and the IP to be in people’s minds.” Kreine further explained that players will be learn more about the world in-game through a “Galactic Guide” and weekly updates that’ll expand on the lore with story cutscenes.

Meanwhile, thanks to a post on the official PlayStation blog, we have been able to discover part of its game modes, with these three being in early access to the beta for players who have pre-ordered it:

  • Trophy Hunt: A respawn-based mode where you fight to take down members of the rival crew and collect their bounty cards to earn points for your team. The first team to reach the target score before time runs out wins the match.
  • Cargo Run: A no-respawn mode where teams compete to retrieve the Blue Buddy robotic package delivery system, plant it at one of the zones, and defend it from the rival crew to win.
  • Clash Point: A round-based, no-respawn game mode where teams compete to control a single capture zone at a central location on the map.

On the other hand, in the open beta for everyone a fourth will be added:

  • Area Control: A respawn mode where teams compete to control multiple capture and control zones around the map. Control two or more zones to increase your team’s score and reach the point threshold to win.

What will Concord’s monetization be like?

Speaking with Eurogamer, Kreines has also gone into detail about how Concord’s business model will work, which as expected, has confirmed that it will be solely and exclusively for cosmetic items.

“When you buy the game, you get... the 16 characters, 12 maps, six modes,” said Kreines. “Every season, all that seasonal content, that’s all free. There’s additional cosmetic-only customisation options where you can further personalise your characters’ looks - this isn’t gameplay, this is only cosmetic - that you can purchase, and that will come out seasonally as well.”

Concord arrives on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 23.
