How does the free satellite Internet work?

The Starlink connection is automatically activated when the user is outside of their traditional mobile operator’s coverage area. At that moment, the device will display the message “T-Mobile SpaceX”, indicating that it is connected to the satellite network. To use this system, in addition to having a compatible phone, devices must have the latest operating system (iOS or Android) installed, as recent updates include the necessary support for emergency satellite connectivity.

In terms of features that will be allowed, the service is currently limited to text messaging, location sharing and access to emergency services. In future phases, however, it is expected to be expanded to include voice calls and Internet browsing, which would represent a total revolution in mobile communications.

This alliance between T-Mobile and Starlink promises to narrow the digital divide by bringing connectivity to even the most remote places on the planet. Although the service is basic at this early stage, it represents a huge step towards global coverage without relying on terrestrial antennas.
