‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2’ now has a release window, and its first details could make it the anime of the year
We already know who the main characters are.

The anime world has a major event coming up in 2026. CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger will soon release the sequel to ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners,’ which became one of the breakout anime hits of its time thanks to its plot twists and high-quality animation. Netflix has already shared the first details about the series.
Here’s the release window for ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2’: Meet the main characters
Netflix has made it clear: ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2’ will premiere on the streaming service sometime this fall. The final stretch of 2026 is the chosen timeframe for the release of what promises to be one of the top anime contenders of the year. The first season was very well received by critics and audiences alike.

Along with the news, the main characters have been revealed. Although it is a sequel to the original story, the cast of characters is, as you can see, completely different. There are four lead actors featured on the official poster shared by the production company.
- Weak Kingsley (above): “Once known as “King,” a veteran edgerunner at the top of his game, Weak now lives in the shadow of his former glory.”
- D (left): “A Snake Nation netrunner with sharp technical skills and a sharper hunger for revenge, D hunts the killer who wiped out his clan.”
- Roman Carax (right): “A young cinephile searching for real stories. In a city that abandoned cinema for neurodance. Obsessed with documenting the truth, he closely follows the lives of other people.”
- Talia Yang (below): “She comes from the corpo towers… but her heart belongs to chrome and violence.”
What Carax proposes is interesting. Through this character, we’ll likely see a critique of the rise of cutting-edge technologies in contrast to traditional artistic models. We’re seeing this today in the controversy surrounding generative artificial intelligence. We’ll see how this peculiar group comes together—or if, instead, their stories will run parallel to one another.
‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners’: The anime you can’t miss
Whether you’re a fan of Cyberpunk 2077 or not, ‘Edgerunners’ is a fantastic anime you can’t miss. The story follows David Martínez, a brilliant teenager trying to survive on the fringes of a deeply unequal society. Following his mother’s death (an event that serves as an emotional and narrative catalyst), David abandons his academic life and enters the criminal underworld by having a powerful military implant known as Sandevistan installed. This device grants him superhuman abilities, but it also marks the beginning of a gradual physical and psychological dependence that will become one of the central themes of the story.
As he falls, David comes into contact with a group of mercenaries known as edgerunners, led by the enigmatic Maine and the lethal Lucy, a netrunner with a hidden past who forms a relationship with the protagonist that is crucial to the plot’s development. The group embodies a precarious form of resistance against the system, operating on a blurred line between survival and self-destruction, where every mission presents both an opportunity and a deadly risk.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ builds its narrative around themes such as identity in a hyper-technological world, the price of power, and the erosion of humanity in extreme contexts. The series introduces the concept of cyberpsychosis (a condition resulting from the abuse of implants) as a metaphor for personal disintegration in a society that constantly pushes toward artificial enhancement. In this sense, David’s journey unfolds as a modern tragedy, marked by the inevitability of his fate.
