David Jaffe’s inspiration when creating Kratos came from George Lucas in 1981
What do Kratos from God of War and Indiana Jones have in common? Apparently, a lot, as the God of War was inspired by the archeologist.

Today, Kratos is one of the biggest icons of the world of video games. The protagonist of God of War made a splash in the PlayStation 2 era, becoming one of Sony’s main characters. What many do not know is that the origin of the Spartan is closely related to one of the highest-grossing films of the 80s.
In an interview published by Italian media 4GameHz, David Jaffe, who was director of the first God of War, explained that ‘Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark ' was his biggest source of inspiration when designing the game. The film directed by Steven Spielberg and with a script by George Lucas was released in 1981 and quickly became a classic. According to Jaffe, the film’s action and adventure elements, along with its exploration of mythological themes, were the reason why he decided to create a work set in Greek mythology.
The former Santa Monica Studio employee was fascinated by the combination of action and adventure that ‘The Lost Ark’ presented., so he ended up using it as a reference to create both God of War and its protagonist. Jaffe intended to create a video game designed around Kratos’ journey in a world full of adventure and action, and he got it.

Recently, David Jaffe had a talk with the director of Days Gone in which he pointed out that he is not at all convinced with the fact that Atreus could be the new great protagonist of God of War. After the end of God of War: Ragnarök, Kratos’ son embarks on a journey that could be explored in the next installment of the saga, and in the opinion of the father of the franchise, it is a mistake.
