‘Deadpool 3’: what version of Wolverine is the one in the upcoming MCU movie?

We take a look at some hints that might give us a clue of which Wolverine is the one that’s been shown in the trailer for the next MCU film, Deadpool and Wolverine.

Wolverine is set to be the co-star of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, the third Deadpool movie and the next Marvel Studios film. After the premiere of its first trailer, doubts about what version of the mutant we’ll see on the big screen next July have escalated among MCU fans. And the return of Hugh Jackman as the famous mutant Logan is one of the biggest surprises of the movie, which in itself raises many questions about which version it is exactly. Is it the same one from the Fox ‘X-Men’ film franchise? Is it a new variant from the animated series? X-Men ‘97? Is this another Wolverine never seen before in live-action or animation? Let’s review the clues that the trailer for ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ has left us about the mysterious origin of the character.

A different Wolverine in the MCU?

Although Wolverine is the co-star of the new Deadpool film, we have barely seen the mutant in his first trailer. Specifically, he appears in two fleeting scenes, both in the middle of the trailer and at the end. In his first appearance, we see Logan from behind, sitting at a poker table, with the famous Marvel Comics “Patch” white tuxedo, an appearance seen several times in the X-Men comics.

It is not until the end of the trailer that we see Wolverine for a moment with the classic yellow suit already seen in the official and leaked images of the filming, which leads us to think that it is the same Wolverine from the previous scene dressed for combat. However, the more aggressive and less calm personality of Wolverine in the Fox movies does not seem to agree with this more impulsive and violent Logan.

Nor is it explained to us how Wolverine arrives in the MCU, making us think of a variant exiled to the Void (the end of time) by the TVA, the Time Variance Agency, presented in ‘Loki’. These clues lead us to think of a variant of Wolverine, a version of an alternative timeline, as Marvel Studios has already explored with several of its characters in the present multiverse saga.

Now we just need to know the true reason that leads Wolverine to attack Deadpool in a place that looks like the Void, with what remains of Fox’s mutant universe, as the half-destroyed company logo suggests. Is this a Wolverine sent by the TVA to get rid of Deadpool for some reason we still don’t know?

We will have to wait until July 26, 2024 to find out these answers and many more with the theatrical release of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.
