'Deadpool & Wolverine' aims to surpass the record set by the first film

The third installment of ‘Deadpool’ has very positive box office projections for its first weekend and could surpass the first film in its first few days.

Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated events of 2024, not only in the world of superheroes but in cinema in general. July 25 is the date set for its release in theaters worldwide, and the box office projections for this first weekend are so positive that it is estimated that it could surpass the first film in its first days in theaters, which holds the record for the best opening weekend for an adult film since 2016. Such are the expectations for this third installment.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ box office projections suggest the first weekend will be better than the first film’s

According to ComicBook, first weekend box office projections for the third ‘Deadpool’ installment could surpass that of the first film, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. in its opening weekend.

And ‘Deadpool’ (2016) continues to hold this particular record for the past eight years, with approximately $132 million in its first weekend. The first weekend box office is critical in movie releases, as it represents a revenue peak that declines until the film in question disappears from theaters to eventually reach the domestic format and/or streaming services. Predictions for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ are for an opening weekend of around $160 million, which would also be the best opening weekend of any film this year.

One of the distinguishing features of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is that it retains the R rating of the previous two films, and it is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have this rating. This “R” stands for “Restricted,” which means that it is recommended that minors under the age of 17 who wish to see this movie should be accompanied. There are several reasons for this, such as the repeated use of profanity or explicit violence, something that separates it from the rest of Marvel’s “softer” productions.

There are several reasons why these predictions are so positive. For one, it means the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the most iconic role of his filmography. On the other hand, it also implies the integration of Deadpool and the X-Men universe into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney’s purchase of Fox, and of course, the fact of the good chemistry between Jackman and Reynolds cannot be ignored either, with a buddy cop movie-like love-hate dynamic between their characters that promises to give us many memorable moments.

Nor should we forget that Ryan Reynolds’ character’s macabre sense of humor is something the MCU needs after several recent critical and box office fiascos like The Marvels. In the trailers themselves, Deadpool defines himself as “Marvel’s Jesus Christ,” so in between jokes, the powers that be are well aware of the enormous weight that rests on his shoulders.

What is ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ about, and when will it be released?

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is an action/superhero film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen. Six years after the events of ‘Deadpool 2′, Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Reynolds) has left his life as a mercenary behind, but the TVA, an organization that controls and monitors different timelines, forcibly recruits him for a new mission: to stop a variant of Cassandra Nova (Corrin). To do this, he will have the help of James “Logan” Hewlett/Wolverine (Jackman).

The Nova Variant is a mutant with very dangerous psychic powers who has taken up residence in The Void, a timeline “junkyard” where character variants are sent for disposal. Leading an army of discarded variants, Nova threatens to upset the balance of the multiverse, and Deadpool & Wolverine must stop her evil plans.

As mentioned above, much of the anticipation for this new Marvel movie has to do with how it will affect the status quo of the MCU and what kind of interactions the Mer with a Mouth will have with other established characters, if any. Another big draw is to see what cameos are salvaged from previous Marvel works, such as Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth from the first X-Men (2000) or Kirk Jones/Sticky Fingaz’s Blade from the 2006 TV series.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ opens in theaters worldwide on July 25, 2024.
