Death Stranding 2 drains Hideo Kojima’s energy like no other development: “It’s incredibly tough”

The famed Japanese creative admits to living in a constant “crunch time” while working on his new PS5 title: he feels really “tired.”

Death Stranding 2 Hideo Kojima

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, the new video game from Kojima Productions with Hideo Kojima himself at the helm, is one of the most anticipated video games for PS5. Not surprisingly, it is the sequel to Death Stranding, one of the most personal and ambitious titles from the creator of the Metal Gear Solid saga, with an international star as its main protagonist: Norman Reedus. And a blockbuster of this caliber also requires years of development at the highest level, something that seems to be taking its toll on Kojima himself: “Tired,” the Japanese video game designer admitted in a recent post on his official X account, along with a resignation emoji and a photo of the moon in the middle of the night.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach and its difficult development

And the fact is that completing an open-world video game as demanding as Death Stranding 2: On The Beach with a technological requirement as the one that aims to achieve its maximum responsible is not easy. This was expressed by Kojima himself through a publication that quoted his previous photo to add context to the snapshot: “The most demanding period of game development -both physically and mentally- commonly known as ‘crunch time’,” wrote the Japanese creative.

“On top of mixing and Japanese voice recording, there’s an inevitable pile of other tasks: writing comments, explanations, essays, interviews, discussions, and non-game-related work. It’s incredibly tough,” Kojima concludes. All of this takes into account the fact that Kojima Productions has a large staff of between 160 and 200 employees, so it’s not a small company at all.

On top of that, there have been more than a few publications lately where we can see Hideo Kojima himself resting at the company’s headquarters or directly falling asleep at the controls while testing Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, either through his own photos or through Kojima Productions employees. “I fell asleep twice while making a delivery and crashed the vehicle into a cliff. I got a little sleepy,” he admitted in one of the photos.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach has yet to be released on PlayStation 5, although it is expected to arrive sometime in 2025.
