Denzel Washington regrets turning down cult thriller ‘Seven’: “I messed up”

The Oscar-winning actor passed on David Fincher’s dark masterpiece, leaving the door open for Brad Pitt.

Denzel Washington, known for iconic roles in 'Training Day’, 'Glory’, and 'The Equalizer’ saga, and most recently seen in 'Gladiator 2, once had the chance to star in one of the most acclaimed thrillers of the 1990s: 'Seven’. Directed by David Fincher, the 1995 film became a cult classic, pairing Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as detectives chasing a serial killer inspired by the seven deadly sins.

But the role of Detective David Mills, ultimately played by Pitt, was originally offered to Washington. And he turned it down.

Why Denzel said no to ‘Seven’

In a candid interview with Playboy, Washington admitted that the script felt “too demonic” for him at the time. The film’s grim tone and disturbing subject matter didn’t align with the types of roles he was accepting during that period.

“They offered me 'Seven’. I said no. Brad Pitt took the role. I messed up. These things happen,” Washington confessed.

Another factor? Fincher’s reputation. At the time, the director had only helmed 'Alien 3′, a film that received mixed reviews. Washington wasn’t convinced Fincher could pull off the ambitious thriller. In hindsight, he admits it was a major misstep.

A missed opportunity, and a twist of irony

Interestingly, Washington would later star in dark thrillers like 'Fallen’ and 'The Bone Collector’. But even he considers those films “minor works” compared to what 'Seven’ achieved.

The film not only helped solidify Brad Pitt’s career, it also redefined the psychological thriller genre. With its haunting visuals, philosophical undertones, and unforgettable ending, 'Seven’ remains one of Fincher’s most celebrated works.
