Director and cast of ‘Superman’ respond to “Superwoke” backlash: “Somebody needs a hug”

As the new ‘Superman’ film prepares to hit theaters this Friday, July 11, it’s already found itself at the center of a political firestorm. Director James Gunn recently described the movie as a story about “kindness” and “American values,” calling Superman “an immigrant”, a statement that sparked outrage from conservative commentators, particularly on Fox News, who labeled the film “Superwoke.”

The backlash: “We don’t go to the movies for sermons”

During a segment on 'The Five’, Fox News hosts criticized Gunn’s comments, accusing the film of pushing a political agenda. One host even joked, “You know what it says on his cape? MS-13,” referencing the Central American gang in a remark widely condemned as offensive.

The term “woke”, once used to describe social awareness, has become a conservative buzzword to attack anything perceived as politically progressive. By calling the film Superwoke, critics claim Gunn is injecting ideology into a traditionally “neutral” superhero.

Gunn, speaking at the film’s premiere, responded calmly:

“I’m not here to judge people. I think this is a movie about kindness, and I believe that’s something everyone can relate to.”

His brother Sean Gunn, who plays Maxwell Lord, was more direct:

“Yes, Superman is an immigrant. And yes, the people we support in this country are immigrants. If you don’t like that, you’re not American. People who reject immigrants are against the American way.”

Nathan Fillion, who portrays Green Lantern Guy Gardner, kept it short and sharp:

“Somebody needs a hug. It’s just a movie, guys.”

The film stars David Corenswet as Kal-El, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, alongside Sean Gunn and Nathan Fillion.

Despite the controversy, 'Superman’ is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about superhero films of the year, not just for its action, but for its message.
