Disney+ could launch a free, ad-supported tier to compete with YouTube and Tubi
Internal discussions suggest Disney is exploring a no-cost tier to expand its streaming audience.

In a strategic shift that seemed unimaginable just a few years ago, The Walt Disney Company is actively exploring the introduction of a completely free, ad-supported tier for its Disney+ streaming platform.
The initiative, reported by Business Insider, emerged from internal discussions within the company. The core goal is to regain and expand the audience base in an era where completely free video platforms are experiencing massive growth. According to internal sources familiar with the company’s streaming strategy, Adam Smith, Director of Product and Technology at Disney Entertainment, floated this concept during a company town hall meeting.
While the project currently remains in an early exploratory phase, the potential benefit for the everyday user is significant. A free tier would allow fans to dive into the Disney ecosystem without the burden of a monthly fee, making movies and series easily accessible to those actively experiencing subscription fatigue.

The Rise of Free Streaming Alternatives
This shift in strategy directly addresses the modern viewer’s changing viewing habits on smart TVs and mobile devices. Over the last few years, the entertainment industry has seen a massive consumer migration away from traditional paid apps and toward social video platforms and free, ad-supported alternatives, commonly known in the industry as FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television) services.
