Donkey Kong Bananza: 7 facts we learned about the game in the Nintendo Direct
The iconic Pauline joins Donkey Kong in an unprecedented 3D adventure full of surprises and transformations.

The second Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game was revealed during this morning’s Nintendo Direct. Donkey Kong Bananza showcases the creativity of the same team responsible for Super Mario Odyssey, marking the return of Nintendo’s most famous ape to a 3D adventure. In a 15-minute presentation, Nintendo shared details that promise a vibrant, wild experience full of surprises. Here are the highlights.
- Pauline is back - One of the biggest surprises is the return of a young Pauline. It’s not entirely clear how she fits into the timeline, but she will accompany Donkey Kong on his journey using her musical powers. As Donkey searches for bananas and Pauline wants to return home, the two embark on a journey to Planet Core, where their wishes might come true.
- Ingot Isle is our setting - The story takes place on Ingot Isle, an island whose different levels feature a variety of biomes: from jungles to beaches, tundras and deserts. Each area will have its own design and mechanics.
- Movements - The classic Donkey Kong moves are present: run, jump, climb walls... and destroy everything in your path. You’ll be able to break rocks and floors, which will often reveal hidden secrets. In addition, these moves can be upgraded over time to increase their power or range.
- Wild transformations - One of the most striking new features is that Donkey Kong will be able to transform into different animals. For example, a zebra that allows him to run faster or a flying ostrich to cross great distances in the air. These transformations have a time limit, but can be recharged with special objects.
- Enemies - The main antagonist is Void Company, a mining company led by Grumpy Kong, Poppy Kong and Void Kong. They and their guardians will seek to prevent Donkey and Pauline from advancing.
- Two-player mode - The inclusion of Pauline allows for local and online co-op. The second player will be able to control her and use her musical powers to solve puzzles or support in combat. In addition, the game will have a gameshare option, even on first-generation Nintendo Switch consoles, and will support GameChat to play via the internet.
- Amiibo Compatible - The game will be compatible with amiibo, including a special Donkey Kong figure featuring Pauline that will be released on the same day. This will unlock an exclusive outfit for Pauline, while other amiibo will offer additional in-game items.
Donkey Kong Bananza will arrive on July 17, 2025.
