Dusk earns the ultimate praise from Doom’s co-creator; Romero approves.

John Romero plays Dusk and gives it his seal of approval—'You did a good job.
Update:

Legendary Doom co-creator John Romero has finally played Dusk, one of the most beloved retro-style shooters, and his verdict is glowing. During a Twitch stream, Romero explored the game’s dark, fast-paced FPS mechanics, ultimately delivering a message to its creator, David Szymanski:

“Son, you did a good job. I approve of your vocation. You chose well.”

Why is this praise significant?

Romero, one of the founding minds behind Doom, is widely regarded as the godfather of boomer shooters. His approval of Dusk is a huge moment for the game’s developer, as Dusk was heavily inspired by classic FPS titles like Doom, Quake, and Blood.

During his stream, Romero praised the game’s:

  • Atmosphere – Calling it “amazing” and “immersive”.
  • Level design – Highlighting its hidden secrets and classic FPS mechanics.
  • Soundtrack – Complimenting Andrew Hulshult’s eerie compositions.

How did the developers react?

The team at New Blood Interactive was thrilled by Romero’s praise. The studio’s official account responded with an enthusiastic “THANKS DAD”, while composer Andrew Hulshult and lead designer David Szymanski shared clips of the stream.

Studio head Dave Oshry also pointed out Romero’s use of the game’s joke weapon, the BIG F*IN SOAP**, which became a highlight of the stream.

Romero’s endorsement of Dusk solidifies its status as one of the best modern boomer shooters, proving that classic FPS design still thrives. His words, “Son, you did a good job,” will likely be remembered as a defining moment for the game’s legacy.
