Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Sandfall Interactive reveals deeper lore about the Gommage
Sandfall Interactive answers key questions about the Gommage.

Sandfall Interactive has provided new insights into the Gommage, the mysterious annual event that erases people from existence in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While players have long speculated about its origins, the latest lore drop answers some of the biggest questions about the Gommage.
What is the Gommage?
The Gommage is an annual event where the Paintress inscribes a number on her Monolith. Every person of that age or older vanishes, turning into smoke and petals.
One of the biggest questions players had was what happens if someone has their birthday after the number changes. Sandfall Interactive confirmed on X that only those who are already that age on the day of the Gommage disappear: meaning if someone turns that age later in the year, they survive until the next cycle.
When did the first Gommage happen?
According to lead writer Jennifer Svedberg Yen, the first recorded Gommage occurred in Year 85, when elderly twins Anne and Gabrielle vanished. Before this, disappearances were dismissed as coincidences or grief-induced hallucinations, but their case proved the Paintress’s numbers had meaning.
Why does the Gommage happen?
While the game hints at deeper reasons behind the Gommage, Sandfall Interactive has confirmed that the full explanation is revealed at the end of the story. Without spoiling too much, the Gommage is not just a random event—it has a purpose tied to the world’s creation and survival.
With these new insights, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s lore becomes even more intriguing, answering long-standing questions while raising new mysteries. Whether the Gommage can be stopped or altered remains one of the game’s biggest unanswered questions.
