Dragon Ball

‘Dragon Ball Daima’ brings back long-awaited power levels

Nearly a decade after ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly’, the franchise starring Goku is bringing back power levels.

Dragon Ball Daima

Dragon Ball Daima’, the anime series that introduces us to the adventures of Goku and company through the Demon Realm, has reclaimed a concept that had been forgotten by the saga for nearly a decade. So much so, that since 2018’s ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly,’ there has been no mention of the concept of power levels in the franchise. And so it was with the appearance of the Gendarmerie Force, a group of elite soldiers that strongly resembles Frieza’s Special Forces, both in concept and in the humor exuded by its members.

The power levels return with ‘Dragon Ball Daima’

In episode 14 of ‘Dragon Ball Daima,’ Goku and his friends finally reach the First Demon World thanks to their new traveling companion, the ancient Namekian Neva. As a result, King Gomah summons the Gendarmerie Force to protect his realm to stop the advance of Goku and company. In this way, the power levels return to “Dragon Ball” through Gomah and his own elite forces similar to the Ginyu Force.

Maintaining a jocular and carefree tone like Frieza’s wacky Special Forces personality, Gomah’s soldiers stop at a demonic fuel depot before meeting Goku and his friends. There they encounter Majin Kuu and Majin Duu, the two Majin Buu-based creations of Marba and Arinsu. Here, the Gendarmerie boasts of their power to the Majin’s admiration.

“When you’re at our power level, you can buy all these snacks,” one of them assures the Majin. Recall that the last time the concept of power levels or power strata was mentioned in “Dragon Ball” was in the 2018 film ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly,’ when Frieza wiped out some Saiyans with an elite corps of soldiers. This resulted in Broly being banned from the planet Vegeta before Frieza destroyed it and all its inhabitants.

So far, ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ has not increased power levels like in other sagas, as Goku and Vegeta have not had too much trouble defeating their various enemies, including the Dragon Ball Guardians. We’ll see if the Gendarmerie Force poses a real threat to our little protagonists.
