Dragon Ball: Fans misunderstood the Super Saiyan concept, according to Toriyama
Akira Toriyama revealed that Super Saiyan 2, 3, and 4 are just enhanced versions of the original transformation.

Dragon Ball remains one of the most beloved franchises in anime and manga, with the Super Saiyan transformation standing as one of its most iconic moments. However, Toriyama revealed that fans never truly understood the concept behind these forms, which were meant to be perceived differently from how they are today.
Super Saiyan 2, 3, and 4 are just enhanced versions of the base form
Many believe Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, and Super Saiyan 4 are distinct transformations that evolve beyond the original Super Saiyan. However, in a past interview, Toriyama clarified that these forms are simply advanced extensions of the base transformation:
“Super Saiyan 2 and 3 are just improved versions of Super Saiyan. After fighting Beerus, Goku realized that mastering his base form and Super Saiyan would increase his power while consuming less energy. So I think he probably won’t transform into Super Saiyan 2 or 3 anymore.”

This means these transformations consume more energy rather than offering entirely new abilities, making them less efficient in prolonged battles.
Why these forms may become obsolete
With Dragon Ball Super introducing new power-ups, the older Super Saiyan forms have become less relevant.
While they were crucial for battles in Dragon Ball Z, their rapid energy consumption makes them outdated compared to the refined abilities used in modern arcs. Still, these transformations remain a fundamental part of Dragon Ball history, shaping some of its most legendary fights.
