Dragon Quest XII moves away from its darker tone after a full reboot
Square Enix confirms the long-awaited RPG has been restarted with a new structure and identity.

After years of sparse updates, fans of Dragon Quest finally got a glimpse of the franchise’s future during a special broadcast celebrating its 40th anniversary. The livestream, held to commemorate the release of the original game on May 27, 1986, featured series creator Yuji Horii and executive producer Yosuke Saito, who confirmed a development shift for Dragon Quest XII.
The most notable revelation is that the project has undergone a full reboot. Originally announced in 2021 under the subtitle The Flames of Fate, the game was presented at the time as a darker and more mature entry in the mainline series. According to Saito, internal discussions about the direction and identity of a numbered Dragon Quest title ultimately led the team to reboot development, reworking both its structure and thematic approach, renaming the game to Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.
A tonal shift from earlier plans
Horii explained that the new version of the game revolves around a protagonist who experiences enigmatic visions and dreams. While those elements remain central to the narrative, he stressed that the world beyond them is now designed to be brighter and more vibrant, moving away from the somber tone suggested in the original reveal.
Saito added that Beyond Dreams will introduce elements not previously seen in the series, aiming to evolve gameplay and presentation while maintaining its core identity. The intent, he said, is to balance innovation with continuity, appealing to both long-time players and newcomers.
Despite the restart and the passing of two of the franchise’s most influential contributors, Square Enix confirmed that Akira Toriyama’s character designs and Koichi Sugiyama’s music will still be featured in Dragon Quest XII. Their work will once again accompany Horii’s scenario, preserving the creative foundations that have defined the series since its inception.
