EA cancels Star Wars FPS game with Mandalorians from the creators of Jedi: Survivor

The company, which will lay off nearly 700 employees, justifies the decision and confirms that it will focus its efforts on Apex Legends and the third installment of Star Wars: Jedi.

The video game industry pales in the face of the wave of layoffs that has been taking place since 2023. After Microsoft and Embracer Group, Sony has announced that 900 employees will lose their jobs as a result of a new restructuring of the company. The same happened to Electronic Arts, which just confirmed the dismissal of 5% of its staff (almost 700 employees). Among the canceled projects is the first-person action title that Respawn Entertainment was developing, the same one that was leaked a few days ago and that would have featured the Mandalorians.

The focus will be on Jedi: 3 and brands such as Apex Legends

“Respawn’s unique ability to connect with players and create exceptional game experiences is unrivaled in entertainment,” said Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment. “As we’ve looked at Respawn’s portfolio over the last few months, what’s clear is the games our players are most excited about are Jedi and Respawn’s rich library of owned brands,” like Apex Legends.

Din Djarin and other Mandalorians.

“Knowing this, we have decided to pivot away from early development on a Star Wars FPS Action game to focus our efforts on new projects based on our owned brands,” as well as “providing support for existing games.” According to Miele, it is always “hard” to walk away from a project, but he wanted to make it clear that this decision “is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion” the team had for this game. “Giving fans the next installments of the iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the second installment of the game starring Cal Kestis, will not be the last video game. Actor Cameron Monaghan has confirmed that he will reprise his role in a third title, about which absolutely nothing is known. It is not known if the strategy game, in which Respawn Entertainment also collaborates, will be continued or not.
