One Piece
Eiichiro Oda reveals one of the biggest secrets of Ace’s past in ‘One Piece’: Which shichibukai did he defeat?
The author introduces the Warlord of the Sea, whom Fire Fist defeated before joining forces with Whitebeard. Prepare to meet the King of Lizards.
During Kuma’s flashback in ‘One Piece’ manga chapter 1,110, there is a moment when it is mentioned that the Marines are missing a shichibukai because of Luffy’s brother. “A rookie named Ace recently knocked out one of the seven, and we have been searching for a replacement.”
The phrase did not go unnoticed by the most die-hard fans of the series, and many began to investigate who this Warlord of the Sea was that Eiichiro Oda had never told us about, and when Ace’s new feat, of which we had no record, had taken place.
Fortunately, the speculation will not go any further. The author himself replied to an information-hungry fan on the SBS of the new ‘One Piece’ volume. The section, an acronym for “Shitsumon o Boshuu Suru” (which means “I’m Taking Questions”), has been used in the past to reveal great unknowns of the series, such as Zoro’s family tree. Well, here’s one more for the collection: the name and appearance of the Shichibukai that Ace defeated.
“He looks like this. His name is ‘Hanafuda’. His hobby is collecting Ancient Zoan Devil Fruits. On what he’s scheming behind this remains unknown up to now. His height is 514 cm. His other name is King of Lizards.”
Oda and his relationship with the Shichibukais
The community will soon have other debates, such as who would replace Hanafuda (Moria, perhaps?), but the fact is that Oda made the most of these characters, which he admitted were never planned.
The first time they were mentioned, in the Arabasta Saga, the author drew their outlines without thinking that Luffy would meet them one day. By improvising, when he finally introduced them into the story, he had to change their appearance so much that they looked nothing like those silhouettes, and the situation became meme fodder.
Now, several decades later and still surpassed in power by Luffy, the Seven Warlords of the Sea are still protagonists in the plot of ‘One Piece.’ On the one hand on a plot and political level (the Marines have just dissolved the organization) and on the other hand because of the Seraphim, their new and terrifying childish version.
How much more will they give of themselves before the end of the series?
