It is never too late to discover a legendary franchise in the world of video games like Fallout, but what better than to do it right now, with the TV series just released on Prime Video? Since its origins back in 1997, Fallout has been a reference for Western role-playing games, until it reached the veteran hands of Todd Howard, it was also synonymous with quality since despite the fact that each of its deliveries has been valued unevenly, none of them fall below average. The only exceptions are spin-offs, either for mobile phones or the massive multiplayer Fallout 76, which despite having been launched in a pretty rough state, was able to correct itself and bring together a large and faithful community.

All the games in the series, from worst to best

The origins of the saga date back to the end of the 20th century, which, said that way, seems very distant. With an isometric perspective, Black Isle Studio offered a game based on the classic Wasteland (1988), with all the role-playing elements that we know but with an even more hostile Wasteland, at a time when RPGs of the time were not precisely characterized by providing facilities to the player. Its sequel, released just a year later, followed the same trend, although its events took place no less than 80 years after the original.

Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel would be the first spin-off of the saga, being a turn-based strategy title, which would mean a hiatus in the franchise of no less than seven years, which would have to wait for what is the highest-rated installment. Already in the hands of Bethesda, Fallout 3 is an achievement in every way, and the leap to 3D was made with great success at all levels, thanks to the company’s experience in another reference RPG franchise such as The Elder Scrolls. With the inherent hostility of the Wasteland, as well as its absurd sense of humor, Howard and company delivered a fantastic game.

Its reception would be so good that it would also have its own spin-off, Fallout: New Vegas, this time by the hand of Obsidian Entertainment, with a quality guarantee with games like at that time, Star Wars: KOTOR II, Neverwinter Nights 2 or the misunderstood Alpha Protocol. Far from functioning as a mere expansion, Obsidian implemented numerous new features such as a deeper crafting system and secondary missions that gave us context about the accompanying characters.

This is how we get to Fallout 4, in which Bethesda placed special emphasis on improving its real-time gunplay more than considerably. Until now, VATS was the combat system preferred by players, and the shooter features of the game were quite inferior, somewhat corrected, in this fourth iteration. In addition, crafting would reach a new level, with the possibility of creating our own base with a very in-depth system of recycling materials and construction of furniture and elements such as walls, doors, ceilings, etc...

In short, these are, according to Metacritic, all the games in the saga ordered from worst to best:

  • Fallout 76 (2018) - 52
  • Fallout Shelter (2015) - 71
  • Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (2001) - 82
  • Fallout: New Vegas (2010) - 84
  • Fallout 2 (1998) - 86
  • Fallout 4 (2015) - 87
  • Fallout (1997) - 89
  • Fallout 3 (2008) - 93
